Ruth Schwartz: Women and the Business 2.0 Revolution

1. What is your passion or purpose you are being called to bring into action right now?

I imagine a world where everyone, on the planet, wakes up in the morning and wants to go to work because they are valued, in concrete ways, not for the time they spend at work but for their contribution to their organizations and the world. This is not our father’s business world any more. This is the knowledge age and that means that the factory model must end: being paid for our time, command and control management and the division between labor and leaders.

2. What were the motivating factors or defining moments that inspired you to get involved and share your passion?

I spent 25 years in the music industry. I started Mordam Records in 1983. By the time Nirvana hit the pop charts and Green Day went platinum, I was running a ten million-dollar distribution company. I discovered that when people were valued for contribution and when their compensation was tied to the profitability of the business, people were able to not only feel valued for their contribution, they loved their work.

When I sold that company, I started High Performance Advocates to help small business leaders transform their lives and their businesses by shifting their leadership role and help others be successful. It is time to build high performing teams and create a shift in capital, compensation and participation in the workplace that will take us humanely into the next centuries.

3. What is your mantra or favorite quote you refer to when you seek inspiration or hope and why?

“Business leaders must find ways to infuse mundane business activities with deeper, soul-stirring ideals, such as honor, truth, love, justice, and beauty.” – Gary Hamel

“Hire good people, then leave them alone.” – William McKnight, 3M President

4. Tell us about a moment recently when you were standing in your full power and purpose?

Working with a local team, bringing them the concepts of high performance, explaining that they could design their environment and results any way they want. We discussed removing all of their preconceived notions, look at what was going to help fire them up and create a better result and have that team tell me …. not only did they see new paths for success but it was going to be EXCITING AND FUN to do so.

5. Why is the work you are doing so important for everyday women?

Most women hate their jobs and are a slave to labor. They work the clock for very little satisfaction. What if they spent that large piece of their life fully engaged? Whether leading or following, being appreciated for their true contribution and compensated for their results, not their time. Would that change the lives of women? I think so.

6. Why is it so important for women to participate in an event like the Passion into Action Conference?

Pure inspiration and motivation. When I participate in this event, I remember that although there has been change for many women in my lifetime, there is still much to go to create the world we want to see.

7. What are you hoping will be the biggest take-aways for women both at the Passion into Action Conference and your workshop?

We can change the world, one person, one business, one idea at a time. It is the time to be authentically ourselves and understand that we can act uniquely without fear.

8. What is your message to women around the world?

I want business women to find their true, humane voice and know that they don’t have to follow outdated and archaic rules to be successful. We can create new models in our own design that are radically different. If we don’t take that

chance to change the very foundations of business, we will not solve some of the biggest problems we face: poverty, disenfranchisement, and depression. We don’t have to put up with it. We can change the way we work at its very root.

Title of Workshop: The Key to the Golden Handcuffs

Program Description: Today, as we are witnessing worldwide change of epic proportions, what are you, as a woman, doing professionally to meet the world’s changing demands? How can you become less overwhelmed and clearer about where to focus?

“The Key to the Golden Handcuffs” will remind you that as today’s leaders, we can intuitively create authentic, rewarding, and successful work that frees us and anyone who works with us.
